La Orotava was colonized by the Spanish from 1496.
We do not know the origin of the name Orotava although many historians have recourse (as often happens in the history of the Canaries), the ancient Guanches (Guanches), who called the area Arautava or Arautopala.
Others claim that the name comes from Taoro, a United native Guanches (Menceyato), which occupied much of the Valley, the Guanches lived for most part of the coastal area, the surroundings of the larger ravines and the sides of the valleys, where they could more easily access livelihoods; Guanchi for the Pico del Teide was instead a place of worship ….
Tenerife was the last bastion Guanches surrendered to the Spaniards in 1496, but the native population, unlike other places of conquest did not suffer high mortality, for several reasons, eg. the fact that the Guanches were also Caucasians, with resistance to diseases common to Europe and North Africa, they also assimilated the Catholic religion and traditions were not unlike those Spanish.
