Flora Canary Islands
SPECIAL FLORA IN CANARY
In the Canary Islands a unique flora
When we speak of the wealth of flora in the Canary Islands, a comparison with the equivalent of the fauna on the Galapagos Islands is far fetched.
In fact, in the archipelago of seven islands with a delicate ecosystem, there is a rich variety of different species.
In the territory of the Canaries, the plant species are very numerous, as well amount to nearly two thousand species of plants and of these, almost a third (28%) are native plants.
In this corner of the Atlantic still survive many plant species disappeared elsewhere from very long time and therefore this region of Macaronesia can be rightly chosen as the paradise of biodiversity and certainly one of the most unique settings in the world.
Forest Laurisilva canaria
Think of the fauna of the Canaries is never apart from its territory and references instinctive profile of these volcanic islands, where the beaches alternate with hills and mountainous, deep overhangs (barrancos) or coastal overlooking the sea (eg Agaete to Gran Canaria or Los Gigantes in Tenerife), but also lava fields (eg Los Azulejos on Pico del Teide) or fertile valleys (eg La Orotava ).
In this context in which to host a wide variety flowers are very different territories, just think of the obvious differences between the eastern islands ( Fuerteventura and Lanzarote ), with those of the West ( La Gomera , El Hierro and La Palma ), with the islands “synthesis” ( Tenerife and Gran Canaria , mix the first), the existing vegetation can be divided into several groups which are basically represented according to different altitudes and climatic zones corresponding to distinct.
More than four kinds of Flora Canary Islands
The first of these consists of the coastal strip, including the kinds of plants well adapted to temperate climates and low rainfall, with a narrow temperature range between day and night characteristics of this group are the plant of ‘ Aloe Vera and to Tabaiba .
The second of them is the mid-range, characterized by the presence of various shrubs ede also Palma or Dracaena Draco Dragon (typically subtropical shrub, which also reaches 20m in height), with trunk dark gray and divided into branches with rosettes of leaves glaucous green, forming a canopy like an umbrella.
The third is the high-end, which is around 1000m, with vegetation more luxuriant, whose best example is the forest of Laurisilva (eg Garajonay National Park La Gomera ), with a high prevalence of plants and lime many plant undergrowth.
A fourth band of Flora Canary Islands is represented by forests of pine Canario , visible for example in Gran Canaria (for example, going up to the Nublo, or in Tenerife, for example, going from Puerto de la Cruz to the Teide) and another end to end represented by the typical vegetation of the highest percentages that go above 2000m and is characterized mainly by shrubs and plants typical of rocky environments.
In addition to the native plants, the climate has meant that plants introduced by man were welcomed and successfully transplanted, it is the case for example of the screw (also with production of fine wines, see, for example those of Gran Canaria and El Hierro), but consider also plants typically tropical crops such as bananas Islands, which in some contexts islanders have taken root successfully (bananitos or platanos).
